Dear friends, relatives, supporters, and allies of Big Mountain &
Black Mesa,

* Red Alert!: Peabody Coal Is Trying to Usher in Their Massive Coal-
Mining
Plans.

* Caravan To Black Mesa is right around the corner! Elders are in
need of wood.

* BMIS is launches a new website!

RED ALERT: The Permitting Process for Massive Coal Mining Expansion
Plans, The Black Mesa Project, has been Re-opened and comments for
Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) Was Issued the Day After
Election! Peabody Coal, the world's largest coal company, is
currently pushing through plans to massively expand dirty coal strip-
mining operations targeting the Dine' (Navajo) & Hopi peoples sacred
ancestral homelands of Black Mesa, AZ.

The Black Mesa Project - FEIS, funded by Peabody Coal and released
November 4, 2008, outlines harmful impacts to every level of the
ecological and cultural systems on Black Mesa. Thousands of acres of
pristine canyon lands, animal and plant ecology and cultural sites
would be destroyed, thus preventing religious practices. The
increased detonation of coal on a daily basis would affect the air
quality and health of miners, local residents, and their livestock.
These plans could deplete the already scarce water tables and
regional aquifer that are all essential to residential survival, as
well as uprooting & relocating more families from their ancestral
homelands due to coal mining expansion.

According to an article in the Gallup Independent on November 11,
2008, "The Final Environmental Impact Statement analyzing the effects
of the Black Mesa Project was published Friday in the Federal
Register
by the U.S."

We cannot allow Peabody and the US government to essentially
sacrifice human dignity and planetary health for elite profit! Find
Out More About These Plans and what local organizations are doing to
protect their homelands & the planet….

A Caravan To Support The Struggle For Survival On The Front Lines Of
Resistance at Big Mountain, Black Mesa, AZ. November 22-29, 2008!
The reports are coming in ~ elders need of wood and it's already
freezing temperatures!

A caravan of work crews is converging from across the western states
to support residents of the Big Mountain regions of Black Mesa who,
on behalf of their peoples, their sacred ancestral lands, and future
generations, continue to carry out their staunch resistance to the
efforts of the US Government, which is acting in the interests of the
Peabody Coal Company to devastate whole communities & ecosystems, and
greatly de-stabilize our planet's climate for the profit of an elite
few. More than 14,000 Dine' people have been forcibly removed from
their ancestral homelands due to spin created by the U.S government &
Peabody Coal, under the guise of the so-called "Navajo-Hopi Land
Dispute".

By assisting with direct, on-land projects with the Sovereign
communities of Big Mountain, Black Mesa volunteer work crews are
helping families resist an illegal occupation and to stay on their
lands, who serve as the very blockade to coal mining! With the
guidance of Black Mesa residents, the aim of this caravan is to honor
the elders and to bring support to their communities before the
approaching cold winter months.
We are at a critical juncture and must take a stand in support of
communities on the front lines of resistance now!
