Note: The term "SHAMAN" is a word from the Tungusic language of Siberia- it is NOT A NATIVE AMERICAN TERM. If someone tells you they are a Native American SHAMAN- Beware!

Books To Boycott

Aleshire, Peter Warrior Woman Historical fiction from a white male Arizona State University Professor. He makes up a biography of Story of Lozen, Apache Warrior and Shaman.

Andrews, Lynn Medicine Woman, Jaguar Woman, Star Woman , and Crystal Woman (et al) She claims to have been taught by a Hopi Medicine Woman. Her Indian ex-boyfriend later revealed that she perpetrated a multi-million dollar hoax. A Beverly Hills actress who claims that in the mid-'70s she became an apprentice to Agnes Whistling Elk, a Native American medicine and a Cree shaman from Manitoba. Her Workshop "Into the CrystalDreamtime" has gone on nationwide tours. Medicine Woman, the initial account of her experiences, won Andrews an enormous response from readers across the country. Suspiciously, all subsequent books were marketed as nonfiction. The reason for this was that in November 1988 an affidavit was filed with a lawsuit brought by David Carson, Choctow, a writer and former live-in companion of Andrews, contending that "as a result of our personal relationship, she and I composed a series of literary works." Carson has since made claims suggesting that many of Andrews 's experiences were the results of his own creative imagination. He claimed he wove them into a fictional narrative describing her exotic adventures with various shamans based on his own limited knowledge of Choctow culture.

Karl May Adolph Hitler's favorite author. He may have very well been the first twinkie since he never visited the United states, yet wrote books claiming to be an expert on Cherokee spiritual practices. Hitler's obsession with Native Americans sparked the German hobbyist movement which later became the men's movement in the United States. The Swastika was an appropriated Native American symbol. Just like today's twinkies, Hitler and May firmly believed they were honoring the Native Americans when they perverted our cultural symbols.

"Karl May's books where Hitler became infatuated with the Swastika. The swastika was used by many North American Indians, and it frequently appeared in illustrations of May's novels."

Sams, Jamie The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers, Walk the Seven Paths to Spiritual Enlightenment, Medicine Cards, Sacred Path Cards She sells Lakota Sweat Lodges and Medicine Cards. Just like Amylee, she claims to be a member of the "Wolf Clan teaching lodge" (this is a big warning sign) She claims her stories were passed down by two Kiowa grandmothers: Cisi Laughing Crow and Berta Broken Bow. She assigns colors to the moons (i.e.) "Gives Praise Moon" gets the color purple. Strangely enough, she has created a twelve month moon cycle based on the Julian calender and is completely oblivious to the basic fact that tribal people realize that there are thirteen lunar months. She also promotes what she calls the twelve cycles of truth which are supposed to be Seneca teachings. She claims that the thirteen crystal skulls made popular by Art Bell listeners are part of traditional Native American teachings. She tells the reader to use animal bones to create Kachina dolls and ceremonial bone masks. The dead give-away that she is a fraud is that she instructs her followers to make Medicine Shields.

Dr. Scout Cloud Lee The Circle is Sacred: A Medicine Book for Women Claims to be Board Certified (Certifiable) in leading corporate and government groups in team building and "dream stalking." Dr Lee runs the Open Spoke Ranch in Stillwater, OK where s/he claims to use "ceremony as an agent of change." S/he openly admits to making up ceremonies. She also runs something she calls the lodge of the strong hearts. Followers are instructed to make a Parrot feather fan with blue on top because "it is the desire of all women to see blood flow blue." Readers are told that the Hawk fan delivers a message "just like Jesus." Shamelessly declares him/her self the "self-proclaimed Master of Ritual and Ceremony" openly admits to making up the "Malibu bonding stick". I think the joke here is that Ms. Yahoo spelled potato incorrectly just like former Vice President Dan Quayle. To paraphrase Lloyd Bentsen, Moonbeam, you’re no Cherokee.

For those of you who are too young to remember the stumble bum that came before Dubya here’s a reminder: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imHK5-JhxXg&NR=1

Just like in real life, the brown guy gets it right and the white guy tries to improve upon it.

When it comes to the twinks and the waanaabiiz, I would never accuse anyone of making things up because truth is always stranger than fiction.

Twylah Nitsch, an enrolled Seneca, founded the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge for nonIndians (somebody needed to help them, and keep them out of our hair!) AmyLee never claimed to be a part of it, as she is Haudensaunee (and not Wolf Clan!). Just because she respects all Elders don't make her a member of everyone's clubs! Don't know about Jamie Sams' heredity. Why don't you ask her?

Hey Geronimo - I'm speaking to you in sign language right now - can you see it? I have to, because you nit pick to the point you say 'shaman' isn't a Native American word...well, Bro, "Native American" ain't our language(s) either! Gettin' outside and breathe some fresh air - it's way too stuffy in here!

Cruisin' back through...but not for long...the criticism that Ywahoo mispelled potato makes any rational intelligent human being ask, "Who made you the Spelling Bee Gestapo? Don't you have some beloved Elder who can barely write English? What would they think of the way you talk? It was probably some editor, helper, or other who even made the error. In this era when everyone is misspelling everything, often on purpose, do you really think that someone who doesn't use that great American Indian invention, 'Spellcheck' should be ridiculed?" And the comment that the Nazis stole the swastika - c'mon, at least THEY admit they copied the way to exterminate those they (wanted to) feel superior to after the way the US treated Indians. YOU are imitating Nazis (and the United States!) with your online 'book burnings'and censorship! What are you so afraid of...oh, wait, it's all quite clear what it is you are afraid of... I'm outta here - this stretch of internet super highway is poisoned with your web-rage, and look out people, it's contagious! There are other options...including reading ALL of the books on this silly hit-list, so you can THINK for YOURSELVES!

Let’s see now, who should I believe?

I’ve got a choice between the LEGITIMATE, HEREDITARY Cherokee elders, honorable Native scholars, the American Indian Movement or some bunch of anonymous fanatic supporters of yet another fake NDN guru?

Hmmmmm? How can I ever decide?

This is OLD NEWS!

The Eastern Band council denounced Ywahoo AKA Dianne Fisher as a fraud so many years ago that her fanatical supporters hope that no one remembers.

My advice is that anyone who still believes that she’s genuine and that she hasn’t been denounced by every legitimate tribal leader should call the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma or the Eastern Cherokee Nation to verify this well established fact.

THE FACTS ARE:

All of what is presented in her book has been repudiated by Tsalagi elders – OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

What she says IS NOT CHEROKEE! (In my opinion, she peddles the Nazi Occult to ignorant New Agers. Look at the Wikipedia entry for "German Mysticism" and compare it to her teachings - they're NOT Cherokee, they're German. She probably is too.)

Her books are absolutely worthless as far as teaching genuine Cherokee tradition.

Only non NDNs or those who are completely ignorant of Cherokee tradition could find her appealing. Her "secret teachings of the AniKutani" is offensive to legitimate hereditary Cherokee elders. The AniKuta did obscene things and abused their power so badly that the Cherokee rose up and killed them all. Nevertheless, Fisher presents them as "Peacekeepers"

Those who have studied the New Age and are rightfully concerned about their obsession with Ascended Masters (which has basically morphed into a Master Race of white Indians who will supplant the real racially inferior Indians) can understand this. (If you study the Nazi Occult and replace "Aryan race" with "New White Shaman race that vibrates at a higher dimension blah blah blah ... you'll see what I mean.) All these red herrings are meant to distract you from the fact that Ywahoo was born Dianne Fisher to two WHITE parents and does not possess one drop of Cherokee blood – or the blood of any other Indigenous Nation.

Ywahoo (Fisher) is not ENROLLED in any legitimate American Indian tribe.

Vine Deloria denounced her. Indianz dot con has denounced her. She was denounced repeatedly over in Natchat in the early 1990s. She has been on every AIM list of bona fide frauds since the late 1980s.

Nothing in her books indicates that she has even the slightest familiarity with Cherokee tradition. Her portrayal of the ancient beliefs of the Tsalagi involve ludicrous, racist theories about Atlantis and the Plieades, as well as a lot of talk about crystals. This is totally in line with German mysticism (i.e. the Nazi Occult) and has nothing to do with Cherokee beliefs.

Diane Fisher is a WHITE woman who knows how to appeal to OTHER WHITE people by mass producing the most contemptuous New-Age fodder. Her entire function in life is to prey on susceptible white seekers and to relieve them of as much of their money as possible.

I’m not asking anyone to take my word for it. I highly recommend contacting LEGITIMATE tribal spiritual and political leaders and doing your OWN fact check.

Here’s a start: Western Band of Cherokee P.O. Box 948 Tahlequah, OK 74465 | 918-453-5000

Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians 800-438-1601 828-497-8196 FAX Tribal Government Switchboard 828-497-7000 Forum: http://www.easternband.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=59

I’m sure you all can google others. Jerry

By the way, I've seen "truthseeker's" posts defending just about every Cherokee fraud there is Red Elk etc. You takin' a page from the Scientogists playbook? "Web rage" is one of Scientolgy's buzzwords isn't it?

It seems to me is that YOUR GREATEST FEAR is that the WHITE PEOPLE with all the money will start thinking for themselves. Before you start calling people Nazis you ought to check your own love of the Nazi Occult!

Jerry,

Another rational and intelligent Human Being who read Ywahoo' silly books and is appauled.

What is it with twinkies? Why do we have to keep going over old ground? It’s 2008! Dihyani Yawahoo was listed in the AIM Resolution against "Plastic Medicine Men" over 10 years ago. She claimed to be the 27th generation of the Etowah Band of Cherokee. According to my research, that band is "nonexistent".

Why you mention someone like Twyla Hurd, who is despised by her own people, to try to win points here is beyond me. Her teachings were so appalling to the Seneca that she is NOT welcomed in any Longhouse of the Seneca Nation and she is considered a "non-voting" member. Her New Age business was so ridiculous and offensive to her own people that it was banned from the rez. It’s not a very strong argument to drop the name of a disgraced person whose own people don’t want her around and were FORCED to tolerate her on their roles ONLY because of a court order from Washington. See: Anderson v. BIA (US 375 3dCir 1992).

She’s a pretty pathetic individual to have to resort to abusing white power to get her way. Last I heard she was in a lot of trouble with the government for posing as an "elder" and selling phony "adoptions" to anyone who wanted to be an instant NDN. This woman is not respected as an elder by anyone with any knowledge at all of Indigenous cultures and religious practices and never will be. It would seem to me that a rational intelligent person who genuinely wants to "seek the truth" would contact the Seneca Nation and get THEIR side of the story. That’s the logical thing to do, not engage in a cyber war with NDNS you will never win over to your way of thinking.

Bashing Elders again? Twylah was not a member of the Longhouse because she was baptized (12 times) by all the foster families she was sent to. Is your memory so short, or your knowledge so scant, that you do not know how Native people were treated 2 or 3 generations ago? Kidnapped! Forced adoptions! Boarding schools! Names changed! Languages forbidden! Christianity forced down their throats. That's one reason why Traditional Longhouse rules forbid baptism into Christianity. The Longhouse is only recently enjoying a resurgeance. The majority of reservation Senecas are still NOT Longhouse members. You are not entitled to speak for the entire Seneca Nation. She was never banned - that's outrageous! Criticizing other Natives for their religious beliefs (while demanding respect for your own) is a fairly recent phenomenom - one which, sadly, was copied from Anglos. While controversial, she did have many Senecas (yes, enrolled - we all know how much that means to you, Maria...or is it Marie :)) who lived with her, under her tutelage. I personally disagreed with nearly everything she was doing - but she was an Elder, and she left her lifelong home after her son tragically died in a fire which destroyed the historic log cabin there. Twylah died last year at age 94. Whether you loved what she stood for or despised what she was doing, she deserves the respect accorded an Elder, especially one who is no longer here to defend herself.

First of all, Amy Lee is a SINGER and she could really care less about you all and your little native communities! Second, who is anyone to say about what is real and what isn't, what, are you all experts on native cultures?? Where do any of you get off?? I mean, half of the "so called" native population is MIXED, yeah, half white or half black or half latinos...just a mixed up community is basically all you have left of the indian population. So, who gives a crap, if a couple of ppl want to be indian and want to do all these things, LET THEM!! It's not hurting you or anyone else in the country, I mean when you look at it, who is native anyway?? Look at all your "native" actors, they all are frauds, adam beach, eddie spears and his ugly brother michael, their dad is WHITE and their mother is a mexican and here they pass as indians and they are phonies!! So I mean, where do any of you get off calling ppl twinkies and shit, that's not right. You all are MAD cuz you don't know half as much as the ppl you call fake know!! So just get off your high ass horses and just, SHUT UP!!! Let ppl do what they want, we as a country have bigger things to worry about than this petty bullshit!!!

Has anyone ever heard of.."Let a bluejay be a bluejay and let an eagle be an eagle"? I have been in the Longhouse many times, am Twylah Nitsch's cousin and to my knowlege she has never been in a foster home or boarding school! She was baptised once. So What. People were annoyed on the reservation because she had so many people coming to her house...and, yes, some of them were annoying. So what? A lot of the people who "Twylah-Bashed" were more miserable in there lives than the people who came to see Twylah...and she helped a lot of people. A lot of Senecas also would come over to see her (of course some were so worried that someone would see them there). Bottom line...we all are annoying and need to work on our spiritual and mental evolution.

This is what I'm told. I can't see them, but, I can hear them, and they show me things from time to time. They say, that it doesn't really matter what tribe you come from, or how much "NDN" blood you have in you. What really matters, is what's in your heart. To be "NDN", is a way of perception, a way of being. A way of thinking, speaking, and living in balance. A way of how you treat all living things with respect and dignity. Why do we think we need rolls and tribal I.D.'s to prove how much "NDN blood" we have in us, or to prove our affiliation with a certain tribe? That is not what it means to be "NDN". You could not have one drop of real "NDN" blood in you, and still be more "NDN" than a true blood. We are all children of this earth. We are all in this together. We all will have to band together, and work together as a whole, as one tribe, one people, in order to survive what is to come. Labels, classifications, creeds, status, position, religions, etc...only separates us all. The power that flows through us, and the gifts that are given unto us are not for our own personal gain, but, are for the good of the whole. Anyone who charges for their knowledge, wisdom, and/or services, is a fake. If there would be anyone to learn true spiritual principles from, then, I guess I would have to say it would be Frank Fool's Crow. In my opinion, he was one of the greatest and most true holy men to ever have lived on this earth. If he were still alive, he would tell you what I'm sharing with you all now, is true. My father taught me what it truly means to be "NDN". You don't see me running back to Qualla Cherokee Indian Reservation to try and "get in where I think I should fit it" though. The Highest and Most Holy One who created all things in existence, knows what is in your heart, and what your intentions are. That's all that matters. This is the message that needs to be spread to all NDN and non NDN alike. There are powerful dark forces that are trying to turn us all against one another. It is up to us in the end to stand together as one and fight, as we have done many times before in the past. Otherwise, we will all die, and so shall every other living thing on this earth as well. Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around, and restore balance, harmony, and peace among ourselves, and to all living things n this earth.

With the concept of shamanism, even though u did say its not a native american term , most adopted that and incorporated into their culture and spiritual beliefs. It is so ingrained into it, most accepted it as part of the Native American term , now if you go and look at the native arts esp the Haidi, Inuits and along the coast of the western USA and Canada, you will see the similarities in the arts and as well in their spiritual beliefs. Siberian,Japanese, and Chinese may have explored that area of North America some centuries ago or even an eon ago. Many had modified and used the Shamanism to fit in their own belief system. They used what is surrounded by them and extend on that concept. I am not a full blooded Indian but I had worked both Inuits and Indians and I am very priviledged and honoured to work with them. You can actually learn a lot from them. A lot of the Native Americans may or may not be aware where Shamanism orginated and using the crystal pendulums in part of their beliefs. They use what they see what is surround them. The Four medicines and directions of the winds along with the animals to represent the spiritual onimipresent which they call" the Creator " or the "Maker". I think this term "shamanism" shouldnt be attacked and where it was 'orginiated' from should be best explained. There are a lot of ' fake' shaman priests/priestesses. For them, its a quick fast buck to make money and able to sucker in people. ( a famous quote comes to mind from Barum, Baily, and Ringling Bro's- "Theres a sucker born every minute. " I just started to study crystal pendulum and I find it a factnasting subject. Thought I 'd put my 2 cents worth in.

Since we've had consciousness the issue is always about balancing discovery/openness with power/greed/ownership -for all of us, no matter our point of view.

Remember, 'god is still speaking'

Hi Guys I do not share the ancestry of any modern North American indigenous peoples. But I have known some very well respected members of a few Pacific Northwest tribes. My ancestry is from Poland (100%). My grand parents came in thru Ellis Island in the 1880's. Our family has been lost, scattered by wars and politics over time. It is hard to trace our family tree and heritage. This is why I feel a 'kinship' with all the North American native peoples. There was no Poland when my Grandfather was born, in the mid 1800's. We were wiped out. But we rebounded, rebuilt our country, and re-asserted ourselves into the modern ages; as I believe you all will. I enjoy your culture, attending festivals whenever I can. I was raised in the Pacific Northwest, in and around the area called Yelm. The New Agers took over the community, invading every aspect of the locals lives. Under the guise of "Ramtha", a certain self-proclaimed New Age Prophet, J.Z.Knight, has misled thousands. I have left that home as a result. Again, I draw a kinship to your NDN plight. I do not profess to be a healer, a seer, a shaman, or any of that. I am drawn to your artwork, I find it fascinating. I have journeyed far and wide to see first hand some of the tribes beautiful artwork. And I also enjoy reading your tales and legends from the past. I am just me. And as Me, I can see that the world is on the brink of a new and exciting transformation. May your people stand tall and proud, defenders of your your heritage. For all we know, you and I may share a past so far distant that only the DNA remains. Who knows?

I have read many works by some of these authors and many more by others...spiritual, anthropological etc. etc. One can suppose it's up to the reader to discern and take knowledge in a variety ways to use, to grow or toss aside. However, you choose it's up to you. This bashing of certain individuals saddens me greatly, there are many ways to learn even if you learn how:the Not to Way. As is in part listening verses hearing...same principle. All people need to grow, some say the journey is the real value not the end, perhaps the more paths we take the more we gain....afterall real spirit is simply not given, truly truly it's earned. And Bev, perhaps you'd delight in the research by Dr. Spencer Wells, his research connects all peoples all nations through out the entire world with DNA. A beautiful thing. I would like to know what it is you have against the lineage of Leonard Crow Dog. Mary Elizabeth Thunder in particular. And if you don't honor them then you surely don't honor the ones that come behind them? That's a whole lot of people. Are we not all one under the Spirit? Isn't that what we should be working toward, instead of division, unity? Please rethink your bitterness, not for me, because I know who I am and who taught me and the lineage and teachings are sound, but for yourself. Don't let anger and bitterness harden your heart. We all bleed red,and some "twinkies" are more honorable to the sacred teachings than what you are considering to be the real thing. I know that Thunder put up with a lot of abuse and crap to be who she is. She is a woman of great love, compassion and desire for the healing of all the peoples and the planet. No disrespect meant, but this is a lot of hate spewed against these people! No explanation given about Mary Thunder, tho. What is the reason?

Hi. Anthropologist here with a background in American Indian studies. I just have to say a couple of things, especially in regard to that last comment by Mary Dee. It has been thoroughly argued sociologically that Indigenous peoples often have their own spirituality misrepresented and subsequently controlled by those who are not of that culture who claim that they "do it better." Generally they begin by claiming that these ceremonies are public property and everyone has a right to them, then they make claims on that property through copyrights and other measures, thereby using the system of structural violence to legally steal from aboriginal peoples. Saying "we all bleed red," and then saying "we do it better" isn't just a contradiction, it's racist oneupmanship. Sorry, but people have the right to "let anger and bitterness harden their hearts," but they put it a different way. I believe it's said something along the lines of, "don't shit on me and call it ice cream." Instead of getting caught up in the enchanting world (and I'll admit it is) of pseudo- Indigenous spirituality, I suggest you read about the history of structural violence against Native Americans, and how misrepresentation of their cultures (read: plural) crowd out the voices of people who are still suffering immensely until they are once again silenced by their oppressors. Thanks for reading.

Reading through this, I have learned more about the true native teachings than I have known before. I am grateful for this opportunity to realize the wisdom and clarity, compassion, expanded consciousness and oneness which some are choosing to embrace (and many elders have always understood). Souls dedicated to expressing Spirit/Love...thank you.
