Former president Bill Clinton campaigned for the presidential campaign of his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-New York), in Montana on Tuesday.
Clinton met privately with tribal leaders during his first stop in
Havre. Leaders of the Blackfeet, Fort Peck, Fort Belknap, Chippewa-Cree
and Little Shell tribes attended, The Great Falls Tribune reported.
"He said if she's elected, he'll commit himself to the concerns
of Indian Country. It was a profound statement," Fort Peck council
member Tom Christian told the paper. "He said as a president, he never
had time to pursue the things that needed to be done for Indians. I
felt he was sincerely committed to that statement."
Clinton told tribal leaders that the Bush administration has
strained ties with Indian Country. He said his wife will restore the
government-to-government relationship.
